A Flashback in You Season 2 Reveals What Joe Did to Candace, and It’s Horrifying

WARNING: This story contains spoilers from You Season 2.

There are so many twists and turns in You, but one of the most traumatic aspects of the show’s second season revolves around the gruesome fates of Joe Goldberg’s ex-girlfriends.

While we never saw Beck’s death in Season 1, she visits Joe in a new episode (in his mind, anyway), and reveals that he brutally strangled her. And even though Candace is very much alive in Season 2 of You, she is scarred by what Joe did to her.

Throughout Season 1 of the Netflix thriller, Joe believed that his ex, Candace, was dead. But when she showed up in the final episode, he was left to figure out what went wrong.

In Season 2, Episode 5, Joe and Candace find themselves at a wellness retreat, run by Love and Forty’s parents. Candace tries to keep an eye on Joe, who is now dating Love. Meanwhile, Candace pretends to be a movie producer called Amy Adam, and seduces Love’s brother, Forty.

Thrown together, Joe and Candace take part in an activity which ends with them hugging one another. As soon as they touch, Candace is reminded of what Joe did to her, and it’s truly awful.

It transpires that Joe snatched Candace from the street, tied her up, and transported her in a van to the forest. Once there, he tried to calm her down, removed her gag, and said that he had something to show her. Obviously terrified by the prospect of whatever Joe might do to her, Candace made a run for it.

However, she didn’t make it very far before she fell over, and Joe clambered on top of her with a wild look in his eye. He told her to be quiet, and when she wasn’t, hit her head against a rock. Believing her dead, he buried her in a shallow grave in the middle of the forest.

Candace’s flashback also revealed that she woke up, having been buried alive, her hand springing from the dirt like the final scene of Carrie. She pulled herself out of her grave, and went to the police. But without any proof, there was seemingly nothing they could do, which is why Candace decided to take matters into her own hands and track Joe down.

If there was previously any doubt as to whether or not Joe was a total monster, the fact that he unknowingly buried Candace alive should pretty much clear that one up.
