Zidane quit Real Madrid after admitting he was ‘worn out’ and club ‘needed a change’

The Frenchman has made an incredible return to the Bernabeu for his second stint in charge after Santiago Solari was axed.

When he stepped down five days after guiding Madrid to their third straight Champions League trophy, Zidane claimed the club "needed a change".

The 46-year-old believed the squad needed a complete overhaul despite their impressive run of results.

Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari did not fit the bill for Los Blancos and Zidane has returned to pick up the pieces.

When he left in May 2018, he used the word "desgaste" to describe his situation in Spain – which means "worn out, out of gas."

But he added: "I've been doing this for three years, I'm certainly not out of energy.

"The time is right. It's not a decision I've taken lightly.

"I thought about it carefully and it's the right decision, even though I imagine many may not agree.

"After three years Real Madrid needs a change, another way of working, another idea, if we are to continue winning.

"I feel it's going to be difficult to continue winning. And because I'm a winner, I'm going."

Zidane has had time to recharge his batteries and is expected to take his first training session on Tuesday or Wednesday after ten months out of the game.

Los Blancos, who are 13 points Barcelona in La Liga, will return to action against Celta Vigo on Saturday.
