Tottenham confident Toby Alderweireld will sign new contract extension at the club – The Sun

TOTTENHAM are growing increasingly confident that Toby Alderweireld will sign a new contract extension at the club.

The Belgium centre-back’s deal runs out in the summer but there is a belief at Spurs that he will agree fresh terms.

Alderweireld, 30, was free to leave for £25million in the summer window due to a clause in his deal but remained in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

Manchester United and City were candidates to take him but Harry Maguire, 26, was seen as a long-term investment at Old Trafford.

Pep Guardiola needed cover after Vincent Kompany’s departure but he instead earmarked midfielder Fernandinho as a back-up centre-half.

IN POCH'S PLANS

Alderweireld was also on the shortlist of European clubs, including Roma, but was not a No 1 target.

He will be in Poch’s long-term plans should he extend his stay beyond a fifth year after arriving from Atletico Madrid for £11.5m.

Spurs team-mate Jan Vertonghen, 32, is also out of contract next summer but his future remains uncertain.

And their Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen could be sold in the current European window as his deal also expires in 2020.

Real Madrid are ready to slap in a late bid after avoiding a summer transfer saga with Spurs chief Daniel Levy, following their past battles for Gareth Bale and Luka Modric.

Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek is Real’s other option before the La Liga window closes next week.
