The Open betting tips and free bets: Six picks for the Open at St Andrews including 300/1 shot | The Sun

XANDER SCHAUFFELE's 20-1 victory at the Scottish Open provided a timely boost to the coffers ahead of the Open, and we will have to keep faith with the in-form American.

After declaring we need to stick with Schauffele while he remains hot it would not feel right if we deserted him now – although odds of around 16-1 for a Major championship do not seem over-generous.

With St Andrews poised to play firm and fast, it really does bring a lot more players into the reckoning.

The last two winners at the Old Course – Zach Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen – were not exactly bombers, although before that Tiger Woods and John Daly showed it doesn’t hurt to hit it miles at St Andrews.

Woods is likely to be a popular sentimental choice this week, and he should make the cut again, just as he did at the Masters and the USPGA.

But that is probably as good as it is going to get for the 15 time Major champion.

Hot shots: Xander Schauffele, 16-1; Patrick Cantlay, 28-1.

Let’s hope there is still some petrol in the tank for Schauffele, as his Scottish Open victory was his third win in a row.

That streak includes the 36 hole JP McManus Pro-Am in Ireland, and while it was not an official event, it still took a fair amount of winning.

The field included 14 of the world’s top 15 – and so did the Scottish event, so there is no doubt about Schauffeles’s ability to beat the best. And four top three finishes in the Majors are a further cause for encouragement.

Cantlay is his regular practice partner and they also teamed up to win the Zurich Classic, as well as being seen to good effect at the Ryder Cup.

Cantlay is likely to be inspired by his pal’s recent success – he actually threatened to snatch the title away from him at the Renaissance Club with a final round charge on Sunday, before being forced to settle for a share of fourth.

That was still a promising tune-up for St Andrews, and at almost double Schauffele’s odds, he is worth following.

Mid price: Cameron Smith, 28-1; Max Homa 50-1.

Okay, Smith is the same price as one of our hot shots, but his odds are worthy of a place in this category.

The Aussie has looked pretty erratic off the tee since he followed up his Players Championship victory with a share of third place at the Masters.

But St Andrews is the sort of course where you can get away with a few wild swipes, and Smith’s silky putting stroke should prove invaluable on these huge, undulating greens.

Homa keeps on improving – he has now broken into the top twenty of the world rankings – and I can certainly see him adding to his Wells Fargo Championship victory sooner rather than later.

I was impressed with the way he followed up his second round effort at the Scottish Open – where he just made the cut – by heading out to play another 18 holes at nearby North Berwick, to continue his links golf education.

That tells me he is a hungry golfer with a great attitude, and playing at the home of golf is likely to bring out the best in him.

Long shots: Sergio Garcia, 100-1; Jamie Donaldson, 300-1.

LIV rebel Garcia has not been tearing up any trees lately, and has actually been a bit sulky at times. But his Open record cries out for him to be backed at this price.

Garcia has finished runner-up twice and posted EIGHT other top tens in the game’s oldest Major – including two top six finishes at St Andrews.

With the leading bookmakers offering up to 12 places this week, the 2017 Masters champion is worth an interest at these odds.

Former Ryder Cup hero Donaldson has been quietly playing his way back into form since undergoing wrist surgery, and his top ten finish at the British Masters was a definite step in the right direction.

He improved on that with a share of sixth in the Scottish Open, booking his ticket for St Andrews at the same time.

Donaldson is a former Irish Open winner at another of the great links courses, Portrush, so he has the game for this one.
