Slimline Anthony Joshua outboxes and outpoints Andy Ruiz Jr to exact revenge in Saudi Arabia and win heavyweight belts – The Sun

ANTHONY JOSHUA produced a boxing masterclass to regain his position as heavyweight king in front of the Saudi Sheikh's.

The 6ft 6in London ace snatched back the unified belts from his conquer Andy Ruiz Jr in the brand new Diriyah Arena with a unanimous verdict on the cards.

Joshua, having learned from the mistakes that haunted him in New York last June, boxed expertly at range ramming his jab into Ruiz's face.

AJ landed a string of heavy right hands throughout, but at close quarters was reminded of his rival's devastating power which caused him to hold on.

By the 12-round mark a frustrated Ruiz pleaded with Joshua to throw caution to the wind – but the Brit was too cleaver and disciplined as he rode out the final three minutes.

After the unanimous decision was announced, confetti reigned down and emotional celebrations with Joshua's team, family and promoter followed.

Joshua said: “A man like me doesn't make any excuses. This is about boxing – I'm used to knocking guys out.

“I realised last time, I hurt him. But I got caught. I respect Andy and his family, his trainer so much. I wanted to put on a boxing masterclass.

“It's about hitting and not getting hit. It's not a chance of mentality – stay hungry, stay humble. Thank you Andy, thank you everyone in Saudi Arabia and all the travelling fans.”

“It's all about preparations. Careers are all about experience, I took my L and moved on. What did you want me to do? Give up?”

Ruiz – who weighed in a career heaviest 20st 3lb – admitted he was too large on the night but wants a trilogy bout to decide the rivalry.

The beaten champion said: “It was his night. I didn't prepare how I should have, I gained too much weight.

“I don't want to give too many excuses, he boxed me around. If we do the third, best believe I get in the f***ing best shape of my life.

“[The weight] affected me. I thought I'd feel stronger, thought I'd feel better. I tried to train myself, but I don't want to give no excuses. Anthony Joshua did a hell of a job.

“Who wants to see the third trilogy fight?”
