The Rockies are finally admitting what the Yankees already knew: Letting DJ LeMahieu go as a free agent two years ago was a huge mistake.

During a conference call to discuss the trade of another star away from Colorado — Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals — Rockies owner Dick Monfort acknowledged “in hindsight, losing DJ was a big deal.”

“I wish we could have figured out a way to keep DJ,” Montfort said. “We wish we could redo that.”

Instead, they chose not to re-sign LeMahieu following the 2018 season. He made a pair of All-Star teams in his seven-year stay in Colorado and then got even better with the Yankees after signing a two-year, $24 million deal.

LeMahieu has since developed into one of the game’s most consistent hitters and became the Yankees’ primary target this offseason. Following a lengthy negotiation, the Yankees finally re-signed LeMahieu to a six-year, $90 million deal, their most significant investment of an offseason that has also seen them add Corey Kluber on a one-year, $11 million contract and acquire another right-hander, Jameson Taillon, in a trade with the Pirates.

They’ve also agreed to a deal with right-hander Darren O’Day to make up for the loss of Adam Ottavino, who was traded to the Red Sox in a salary dump.
