One over-confident punter has lost an eye-watering sum of money after Argentina suffered a shock defeat by Saudi Arabia in Qatar.

The reigning South American champions entered this year’s competition among the leading contenders to triumph in the Middle East this year, with Messi desperate to win his first World Cup in what is likely to be his final appearance in the competition.

The two-time champions must navigate a group containing Mexico, Poland and the Saudis to advance to the knockout rounds, with their opening game widely regarded as the easiest of the three.

And prior to Tuesday’s game TAB confirmed that one punter has thrown huge support behind the Argentines ahead of the game, putting $160,000 on the heavyweights to defeat their Group C rivals.

That bet would have returned a staggering $180,800 had Lionel Messi & Co done as expected and defeated Saudi Arabia, however two quickfire second half strikes from the minnows absolutely stunned the Argentines, meaning the better takes nothing home.

Another punter put $100,000 on Argentina to win by over 2.5 goals against Saudi Arabia, meaning they needed to win by a margin of three or more goals for the punter to take home winnings of $170,000. He, too, goes home with nothing.

Elsewhere, some punters have backed Australia to do the impossible and beat reigning world champions France on Wednesday morning.

Graham Arnold’s side face a monumental task against Didier Deschamps’ Les Bleus, who have been weakened by a handful of injuries to key men such as Karim Benzema, Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante.

Those setbacks have clearly inspired some betters to put their money on the Socceroos. One punters stakes $700 at $12 odds for an Australia win, which would return $8,400.

Saudi Arabia’s come-from-behind victory has stunned the world of football and has meant that two Australian punters have lost six-figure sums after betting for Argentina

Another put $500 on the Aussies but at slightly shorter odds of $10, equating possible winnings of $5,000.

World Cups are renowned for dark horses springing huge surprises on the rest of the competition and advancing deep into the tournament.  Croatia reached the final in 2018 and one punter has backed them to go one step further and win the competition, putting $5,000 on Luka Modric & Co.

At odds of $51, a Croatia triumph would result in winnings of $255,000.

Another punter has put $1,000 on Switzerland to win the tournament, with possible winnings of $101,000 with the Swiss listed at $101 odds.
