Plaxico Burress knows which QB the Giants should draft: Dwayne Haskins

A big reason Eli Manning won his first Super Bowl ring believes the Giants need to move on from their longtime quarterback.

Former wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who caught the Super Bowl XLII-winning touchdown from Manning in the upset of the then-undefeated Patriots in 2008, endorsed the idea of the Giants drafting Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins in the 2019 NFL Draft, believing the 21-year-old could best utilize the skills of Saquon Barkley and Odell Beckham Jr.

“They have generational talent, but at the quarterback position, we just gotta find a way to solidify that position….and my mindset is if Dwayne Haskins is available at the sixth pick, we gotta take him,” Burress said on Fox Sports 1’s “Undisputed.” “Kyler Murray may end up at the New York Giants, but from a passing standpoint, with Sterling [Shepard] and Evan [Engram] and Odell, Haskins….is a better fit for that offense.”

Haskins, a New Jersey native who grew up a Giants fan, finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting in his lone season as the Buckeyes starter, throwing for 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while competing 70 percent of his passes.

Burress, who spent four seasons with the Giants before accidentally shooting himself in the leg in 2008 — leading to his release, and a prison sentence — believes Manning could still be successful if he remains the starter next season, but improving the offensive line would be the only way to allow the immobile 38-year-old quarterback to take advantage of his numerous offensive weapons.

“From what I’m hearing, from what I understand, he’s gonna come back and play another,” said Burress of his former teammate. “They have to find a way to protect him, first and foremost. If you can’t protect him, he can’t go out and perform.”
