Pat Shurmur reprimands Janoris Jenkins for Twitter slur

Pat Shurmur wouldn’t disclose whether any discipline was meted out to Janoris Jenkins, but the embattled Giants coach made sure Jackrabbit knows he and the organization thought the veteran cornerback directing a Twitter slur at a fan during practice Wednesday would not be tolerated.

“I talked to Jackrabbit,” Shurmur said before practice Thursday. “With regard to the discipline, I would never share that with you, but I talked to him and explained to him that what he said was very inappropriate and offensive.

“It’s my understanding that after we spoke, he issued an apology. So that’s where I stand with that.”

Jenkins sat out practice Wednesday with an ankle injury, and responded to a fan who criticized his play this season with “I can only do my job, retard.”

Several hours later, Jenkins tweeted a halfhearted apology that read: “My apology for the word I used earlier, really didn’t mean no “HARM”. #RabbitLoveEverybody.”

Asked if he needed to set a precedent with the veteran as an example to the rest of the team, Shurmur replied: “I think each situation is different, and he’s well aware of my feeling and he’s well aware of how we feel with his choice of words, and what he did. He’s well aware of that, and the team is well-aware of that. So you learn from that, and they will learn from that.”

Shurmur added that Jenkins shouldn’t have tweeted such a reply regardless of the timing — be it before, during or after practice.

“He shouldn’t,” Shurmur said. “I don’t participate on Twitter. I don’t see the value in any of it, quite frankly. I’m worried more about what the people in the building think of me than somebody that I’ve never met. That’s my view of it, but I know it’s part of the world that we live in, especially the young people in the world. In my opinion, he shouldn’t be involved with that.”
