NFL draft expert: Daniel Jones is Giants’ weird answer at quarterback

This wasn’t exactly a ringing endorsement.

NFL Network draft insider Daniel Jeremiah has Duke’s Daniel Jones as the fourth-highest rated quarterback on his board, but still has him going sixth overall to the Giants, and his explanation isn’t about Jones’ physical tools, but that he believes he fits Big Blue’s new conservation offensive approach.

Jeremiah sees Jones more of a game-manager, and with the Giants’ recent trade of Odell Beckham Jr. signaling their plans to build around running back Saquon Barkley and defense, the NFL draft expert thinks they are highest on Jones.

“When you watch Daniel Jones, the way he plays, the things he’s done, he can play an efficient game,” Jeremiah said on a Thursday conference call of Jones, who threw 22 touchdown passes, nine interceptions and completed 60.5 percent of his passes for 2,674 yards as a junior with the Blue Devils in 2018.

As for whether the Giants will go with a quarterback with their first or second first-round pick, Jeremiah believes the smart move is the former.

“I think if you have the conviction and you want a quarterback, there’s no such thing as taking him too early,” Jeremiah said.
