Newcastle 'make contact with PSG over Keylor Navas' as they plot ambitious transfer to boost Eddie Howe's survival bid

NEWCASTLE have made contact with Paris Saint-Germain regarding Keylor Navas, according to reports.

The Toon are plotting an ambitious transfer to bolster Eddie Howe's squad for the scrap to avoid relegation.

And according to RMC Sport, the Toon expressed their interest in the PSG goalkeeper.

Newcastle, who sit 19th, have conceded 43 Premier League goals this season with Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman all having stints.

Dubravka kept the Magpies' only clean sheet of the season against Burnley in December.

But the chance to try and sign a world-class stopper like Navas, 35, would provide a major boost to the side currently two points from safety.

The 100-cap Costa Rica star has plenty of pedigree after 162 appearances for Real Madrid – winning three Champions Leagues – before joining PSG in 2019.

He is closing in on 100 games for them and has just about retained the No1 spot between the sticks despite the summer arrival of Italy hero Gianluigi Donnarumma.

And therefore the report adds the Ligue 1 giants want to keep Navas for the rest of the season and will not entertain any January bids.

Even then, it would take a lot to convince him to swap playing alongside Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos for Jonjo Shelvey and Paul Dummett.

As revealed by SunSport, Newcastle have also been keeping tabs on Lazio keeper Thomas Strakosha as another possible option.

Elsewhere, Donny van de Beek rejected the chance to join the Magpies on loan.

And the immediate focus for Howe and the new Saudi owners is improving the defence with at least one new centre-back wanted before the transfer window closes.
