Naomi Osaka ousted by Yulia Putintseva in straight sets in first round at Wimbledon

Naomi Osaka's trip to Wimbledon was brief.

The No. 2 seed in the women's field — and No. 2-ranked player in the world — lost 7-6, 6-2 to Yulia Putintseva on Monday, exiting in straight sets in the first round.

Osaka, who has won back-to-back Grand Slam singles titles in the past year, has yet to make it past the third round at Wimbledon in her young career. The 21-year-old won the most recent U.S. and Australian Opens before reaching the third round in the French Open at Roland Garros earlier this summer.

For Putintseva, the match was not only her first time playing on Centre Court at the All England Club; It was also one of the most significant victories of her career.

"It's amazing," Putintseva said after the match, according to WTA.com. "When I first stepped on this court, I'd never played here before, or even been on it, so I was a little surprised by the shape. Usually they're more square, but this one was rounder, so that was new for me. I was so excited, and I think I did a good job out there, fighting great. I'm very happy now."

Osaka committed 38 unforced errors in the match, to Putintseva's seven.

Putintseva, 24, was No. 39 in the WTA's most recent women's singles rankings. She will face Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland in the second round.
