MVG says ‘boring’ Rob Cross can have no complaints about Premier League snub

Michael van Gerwen reckons Rob Cross has been overlooked for a Premier League darts place because he is “boring”.

Cross was one of the notable omissions as the PDC finally unveiled the eight-player line-up for the annual darting roadshow, which begins in Belfast on Thursday. The world’s top four of Michael Smith, Van Gerwen, Peter Wright and Gerwyn Price, whose places were already secure, will be joined by Jonny Clayton, Nathan Aspinall, Dimitri Van den Bergh and Masters champion Chris Dobey.

However, as well as Cross, who lost to Dobey in the Masters final, there was no place for world number five Luke Humphries, nor European champion Ross Smith and UK Open winner Danny Noppert.

Cross has long insisted he was out of Premier League contention and hinted he wouldn’t accept a spot had it been offered anyway. Van Gerwen added his voice to the debate by saying Cross’s personality is not right for the Premier League before Monday’s official announcement. He also criticised Voltage's conduct on stage.

“That cynical stuff, I find it weird,” Van Gerwen, who was knocked out of the Masters by Cross, told Viaplay at the weekend.

“You can't say anything about his qualities though. He's a fantastic player."

But the Dutchman added: “Do you know why it is that the PDC didn't choose him for the Premier League? It's because the PDC also thinks he's a boring player.

“You either have that or you don't. Either you're a player with character, or you're not. He just doesn't have it. That silly laughing and acting…”
