MLB punishes Mets’ Jacob Rhame for head-hunting

Jacob Rhame is still paying for his controversial message pitch.

The Mets’ hurler was suspended two games and handed an undisclosed fine by MLB on Thursday, two days after throwing behind Phillies’ first baseman Rhy Hoskins and consequently reigniting the rivalry between the NL East contenders. The Mets are expected to appeal the ruling, The Post’s Mike Puma reports, which implicated Rhame for “intentionally throwing a pitch in the area of the head.”

Rhame launched a 97-mph fastball near Hoskins’ head, leading to harsh words and a brief bench-clearing during the ninth inning of the Mets’ 9-0 rout of the Phillies on Tuesday.

The reliever of course defended himself, while the Phillies sought revenge for the perceived head-hunting shenanigans.

Hoskins had the last laugh, homering of Rhame during the Phillies’ 6-0 rout on Wednesday, and taking a 34.23 second trot — the slowest of the Statcast era, which began in 2015 — around the bases.

“I was just enjoying the moment,” Hoskins said.

Phillies manager Gabe Kapler added: “I think that if a ball goes over your head the night before, the best way to sort of way to get back at the pitcher is by putting the ball in the seats.”
