Mikael Granlund traded from Wild to Predators while fiancee was giving birth

The NHL trade deadline is among the most exciting days of the hockey season for fans, with players being dealt at a rapid pace as teams buckle up for a playoff run.

Lost in the transaction intrigue is the fact that players are real people who suddenly have their lives uprooted.

Deadline change hit Mikael Granlund particularly hard this year. The 26-year-old forward was traded from the Minnesota Wild to the Nashville Predators … while his fiancee was giving birth.

"The Granlunds are honestly in labor right now, so to have this happen makes it even more difficult to disrupt people's lives," Wild GM Paul Fenton said.

"That's the unfortunate part of being in this industry," Fenton added. "They all know that it's a business. From the Wild we wish them nothing but the best, hopefully with a happy, healthy baby."

From a hockey-standpoint, Granlund is going from a selling team fighting for its playoff life to one of the Western Conference's top contenders. But with a newborn in the home the timing of his move pretty much couldn't be worse.

Minnesota was the only NHL team Granlund had played for after the Wild drafted him in the first round of the 2010 draft. He suited up in 461 games for the franchise, recording 317 points.
