Matt McGloin rips coaches during and after Guardians’ loss

The XFL has been hoping increased in-game access to players would give fans a more unvarnished look at what goes on during a football game.

And Guardians quarterback Matt McGloin didn’t disappoint during a halftime interview with ESPN’s Dianna Russini during Saturday’s ABC telecast.

“We need to change the whole entire game plan at halftime,” McGloin said of the Guardians, who were blanked in their 27-0 loss to the DC Defenders at Audi Field in Washington. “There’s a lot going on right now. It’s embarrassing for us for an offense. There’s a lot of things for us to fix and correct.”

Guardians coach Kevin Gilbride said he wasn’t pleased with McGloin’s play in the first half.

“I need to go talk to him and figure out what the problem is because he needs to play better,” Gilbride told Russini.

But McGloin wasn’t done, ripping the play calling after the game, too.

“There’s a lot of stuff going on behind closed doors,” said in his final on-field interview. “We need to clean that up. Communication is especially is one, and it showed today.

“At no point in time did I think we were comfortable out there. At no point in time did I think we were in a position to try to be successful. I think it was pretty easy to see.”

McGloin, who played for Penn State and the Raiders, completed just 8-of-19 passes for 44 yards, with two picks and two sacks. He was pulled for Marquisse Williams, who went 4-for-8 for 51 yards.

McGloin also was caught on the telecast questioning a teammate but not naming him during an in-game conversation Gilbride.

This was a much different outcome for the Guardians, who scored a 23-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Vipers at MetLife Stadium in Week 1.

After the game, Gilbride said the offense failed to sustain any drives.

“We started off slow on both sides of the ball,” he said. “I thought our defense picked it up and played well. Offensively, it seemed like every time we started to get something going, we shot ourselves in the foot.”

It was a much better day for former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones.

Jones — who saw little action during his two-year NFL career with the Chargers and Bills — was 23-for-37 for 276 yards with two touchdowns and just one interception.
