Man Utd transfer blow as defender Diego Godin snubs Solskjaer to join Inter Milan as crisis grows

The Uruguay international has undergone a medical in secret and will move to the San Siro on a free in the summer.

Sky Sport Italia understand that Godin, 32, has signed a two-year deal worth £3.9million-a-season, which could yet rise to £5.2m including bonuses.

United were out-manoeuvred in the summer in pursuit of the centre-back, with the player using their interest to gain a new deal at the Wanda Metropolitano.

But Godin is available again after Atletico were unable to follow-through on their promise of a new contract.

Despite their best efforts United failed to sign a new defender in the summer after failed pursuits of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng.

As a result the club have retained an interest in Godin but they look set to be snubbed for a second time.

Though in the twilight of his career, Godin still remains among the best defenders in world football.

His produced a spate of impressive performances at the 2018 World Cup for quarter-finalists Uruguay – including keeping Cristiano Ronaldo quiet in the last-16 win over Portugal – leading to interest from Juventus.

The veteran was then named in the team of the tournament alongside Ronaldo and golden boot winner Harry Kane.
