Lindsey Vonn grimaces in agony after horror crash in last race before retirement

The American three-time Olympic medallist, 34, clipped a flag and hit the ground hard in a sickening fall at the super-G event at the World Championships in Sweden.

Fortunately, Vonn was able to get back to her feet and finish the race after medics desperately scrambled to check on her wellbeing.

Vonn announced last week that she would be quitting skiing due to her "broken body".

The US star claimed: "After many sleepless nights, I have accepted I cannot continue.

"The past two weeks have been some of the most emotionally challenging days of my life.

"I am struggling with the reality of what my body is telling me versus what my mind and heart believe I'm capable of.

"The unfortunate reality is my mind and body are not on the same page.

"My body is broken beyond repair and it isn't letting me have the final season I dreamed of.

"My body is screaming at me to STOP and it's time for me to listen.

Vonn – who dated golf star Tiger Woods for three years up until 2015 – went on to say she's always risked serious crashes to be the best, but can go on no longer – after undergoing secret surgery last year.

She added: "I have always pushed the limits of ski racing and it has allowed me to have amazing success but also dramatic crashes.

"I have never wanted the storyline of my career to be about injuries and because of that I decided not to tell anyone that I underwent surgery this past spring.

"So please let my story be of comebacks, victories and even injuries, but do not tell my story as one of failures or unreached goals."
