Jorginho’s Chelsea career not over – the players booed by their own fans who came back from the brink

The Chelsea midfielder was the target of the boo boys when he came on as a sub against Malmo in the Europa League last night.

Despite starting the season well with the Blues, the wheels have come off for Maurizio Sarri and his men who have endured a miserable run of late, including heavy defeats to Bournemouth and Manchester City.

But the Italian schemer shouldn't be too disheartened, because it has happened to the best players in the world.

Join SunSport in giving Jorginho some hope for the future as we reveal those who managed to win back their fans… eventually!

David Beckham

After THAT sending off against Argentina, burned effigies, only to end up his country's icon, Becks has always had skin like a rhinoceros.

But later in his career, while at LA Galaxy, he was targeted by US fans following his decision to go on loan to AC Milan.

When he returned to action six months later against NY Red Bulls his every touch was roundly booed.

The Galaxy fans weren't booing him a year later when he helped the club win the MLS Cup though – and are now planning to build him a statue.

Lionel Messi

Proof that even the greatest get it from their home fans when they're disgruntled.

After Messi and Co. were humbled by PSG 4-0 in 2017 in the Champions League, the Camp Nou fans were baying for blood.

The little Argentinian got it, getting stick every time he caressed the ball in a game against Leganes.

The fact that he scored a late winner in a 2-1 win did nothing to improve matters, and he was still booed off the pitch at the final whistle.

Cristiano Ronaldo

In fairness it was always a small contingent, but after everything the Portuguese had done at the club it's beggar's belief he was targeted in the first place.

During a quarterfinal match against Bayern Munich in 2017 (a game in which Real Madrid won 6-3 on aggregate, with Ronaldo scoring five of those goals), home fans whistled angrily towards CR7 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It came at a time when their all-time record goalscorer was transitioning into more of a no.9, rather than a speedy winger, and the Real Madrid faithful felt he wasn't putting the effort in.

Bearing in mind he went on to score 12 goals in the Champions League, and followed it up with a 15 goal haul the next season, he soon answered those cat calls.

Wayne Rooney

When Rooney returned to Old Trafford with Everton last season he was given a standing ovation by the United faithful.

But it was a different story when he was haggling the board for a new contract back in 2010 and flirted with the idea of signing for Manchester City.

After a dispute with the senior figures at the club, Rooney asked for a transfer which forced the Red Devils hand into offering him a five-year contract that made him their highest paid player ever.

At the time, United fans stood by Sir Alex Ferguson and the club – eventually Rooney had to issue a groveling apology.

Mauro Icardi

The Argentinian striker is currently at loggerheads with Internazionale over a new contract, and was recently stripped of the captaincy.

But, in truth, Icardi has enjoyed a frosty relationship at Inter in the six years he's banged in over 20 goals a season there.

Back in 2016, he released his autobiography claiming he was "hailed a hero" for confronting ultras (Inter's defiant fan group) following a defeat in 2015.

He was fined by the club, and the ultras turned on him saying he was "finished." They even celebrated when he missed a penalty against Cagliari.

Gareth Bale

There's very little the Welshman can do at Real Madrid without being scorned by the home faithful.

A 11-minute hattrick that helped Los Blancos reach the World Club Cup Final certainly wasn't enough, nor did the stunning bicycle kick in last season's Champions League Final allay the boo boys.

And since Ronaldo left, the criticism has intensified as Real Madrid suffer indifferent form.

It's easy to forget he's scored 100 goals for the club in just 219 games, and you can bet he'll still score a few more before the end of the season.

Marouane Fellaini

As David Moyes' only signing in his first transfer window at Manchester United, Fellaini had his doubters from the beginning.

In 2016, he was booed as he warmed up along the touchline at Old Trafford by his own fans.

When he came on as a sub in the game against Tottenham, he was again booed as he entered the action.

The previous week he'd conceded a penalty against Everton that led to a 1-1 draw, and the United faithful were clearly still livid.

The Belgium international is clearly having the last laugh now though, securing a £235k per week deal playing in China, and leaving with some acknowledgement from fans he was a handy Plan B.

Romelu Lukaku

When you're winning a game 3-0, you don't expect your own fans to turn on you.

During a match against Bosnia & Herzegovina, Lukaku was heckled by fans for missing an open goal.

He later popped up with a goal 11 minutes from time to seal a 4-0 win, but the damage was done and he slammed his fans.

Fast forward to 2018 and he soon had Belgium fans cheering with a four goal haul at the World Cup as his nation secured a third place finish.
