Joe Judge Giants contract details emerge: Five years, over $5 million per season

Joe Judge received five years of security and a promise of patience from the Giants.

After the Giants refused an opportunity to match Matt Rhule’s seven-year, $62 million offer from the Panthers without even first interviewing him, Judge signed a five-year deal to be the 19th head coach in franchise history, The Post confirmed. Judge’s annual salary is believed to exceed $5 million.

“There are always risks when you hire a coach who’s never been a head coach before,” co-owner John Mara said. “I’m just excited about what he brings to the table here. He has a certain poise and presence about him. You guys have pointed out the last couple of years that I’ve had a lot of experience interviewing coach candidates.”

The self-deprecating Mara is right. Judge is the Giants’ fourth head coach in six years. Only two of the first six hired after Bill Parcells retired for the first time in 1991 lasted more than four seasons.

The Giants are paying two head coaches for the next three years because Pat Shurmur was fired just two years into his five-year deal. Ben McAdoo, Shurmur’s predecessor, was fired less than two years into his four-year deal – he hasn’t worked in the NFL since – and the Giants are finally off the hook with him.

Some of what is owed to Shurmur will offset if he is hired as an offensive coordinator in 2020, as is expected to be the case, The Post previously reported.

“It’s up to us to show a little more patience with this coach than perhaps we have over the last few years,” Mara said, “because he is a first-time head coach.”

That’s no solace to McAdoo, who was a first-time head coach promoted from within the organization. But he lost control of the locker room and the Giants were in a different position then – chasing another Super Bowl with Eli Manning and fresh off the Tom Coughlin discipline era – than they are now.

This is a rebuild, though Judge understands his primary charge is to win and rejuvenate fans.

Mara actually said earlier this month he isn’t convinced McAdoo and Shurmur would not have been successful over a longer period, but he had to trust his gut at the time. He declined to share the specifics of Judge’s contract.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first to report the length of Judge’s contract.

“Hopefully,” Mara said, “he’ll be here for a while.”
