Jed Lowrie suffers setback on brink of Mets debut

WASHINGTON — The Mets have a few more weeks to sort through a tough roster decision.
It had appeared to be imminent, with Jed Lowrie nearing a return from a sprained capsule in his left knee, but the infielder suffered a setback in his rehab assignment, now dealing with a strained hamstring, manager Mickey Callaway said Tuesday.
Lowrie has been sent back to Florida to start rehabbing his latest injury and will be reassessed in “a couple weeks.”
“He told us after the games that he played in and we got him evaluated,” Callaway said, adding it was a “low grade one” strain.
After playing Friday and Saturday with Triple-A Syracuse, the offseason free-agent signing did not play Sunday and was checked out by the Mets’ medical staff Monday.
Todd Frazier was set to get the start at third base Tuesday, though J.D. Davis has earned more starts there lately. The delay of Lowrie’s arrival keeps Dominic Smith with the Mets and keeps Keon Broxton safe for now.
