Jamie Vardy adds to incredible scoring record against the top six

The Leicester striker, 31, scored the only goal of the game in his side's shock victory at Chelsea.

Not only did it ease the pressure on his manager Claude Puel – whose job is under threat after a string of poor results and performances – but it piled further misery on the Premier League's big boys.

Vardy now has a stunning 13 goals in his last 15 league games against Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool.

The Leicester star has enjoyed his games on the biggest stage since arriving in the Premier League in 2014.

He grabbed his first top-flight goal in the incredible 5-3 win over United that September and since then has stepped up when needed most.

Think that volley against Liverpool, that lob over Hugo Lloris, that record-breaker against United, that hat-trick against City – Vardy just cannot help himself.

He came off the bench to nod in at Old Trafford on the opening day of this season.

In the last campaign, though, he was unstoppable.

Of his 20 Premier League goals, 11 were against the 'top six', including three against both North London clubs – that is partly because Leicester often play a more counter-attacking game against such teams when they see less of the ball.

Today's strike was just his sixth of this season, though. A large part of that is down to a lack of goalscoring opportunities under Puel.

And Vardy admitted the style of play under the Frenchman does not suit his fast-paced game.

He said: “It does get a bit frustrating but we are transitioning into a different style of play.

“I think we've just got to keep working hard on it and eventually it will get us going forward that bit quicker because when we get into attacking positions eventually the ball will get picked out for some of my runs.”

And that is exactly what happened today.

Brought back in after missing the Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City, his finish at Stamford Bridge was Vintage Vardy, timing his run off the shoulder of the defender to perfection as James Maddison slipped him through before the striker blasted past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

It proved to be the match-winner for the Foxes who earned their first win in five matches and climbed up to ninth.

Next up for Vardy and Leicester? Manchester City on Boxing Day…
