The Jacksonville Jaguars are finalizing a deal to make Urban Meyer their next head coach, according to multiple reports.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported on Thursday morning that the two sides were in “advanced talks” to strike a deal after meeting the day before. The Chargers were also in touch with Meyer.

MMQB.com reported the last of the negotiations are over staffing and upgrading the team facilities. Schefter warned that a deal is not yet quite done, but is “trending that way.”

Meyer spent 17 years as a head coach in the college ranks, winning three national championships – two with the University of Florida and one with Ohio State. He did attract a considerable amount of controversy at each stop, accused of fostering a toxic environment at Florida and turning a blind eye to domestic violence allegations against Ohio State assistant coach Zach Smith.

Meyer, who is leaving his job as a Fox Sports analyst, now takes control of a Jacksonville team that holds the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. It’s widely expected that they will use the pick on Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence, considered by many to be a generational talent at the position.

Meyer is the first hiring of the NFL coaching carousel with the Jets, Falcons, Lions, Texans, Chargers and Eagles still having openings.

The Jaguars fired Doug Marrone after going 1-15 during the 2020 season. After leading Jacksonville to the AFC Championship Game in his first full season as coach in 2017, Marrone went 12-36 over the following three seasons.
