How Tua Tagovailoa’s NFL draft decision helps Giants

The Giants didn’t Tank for Tua, but they should be happy all the same that the Alabama star declared for the 2020 NFL Draft on Monday.

Tua Tagovailoa’s decision makes the Giants’ No. 4 pick in the draft more valuable, if they choose to trade it for a haul of selections and/or players. The three teams picking after the Giants — the Dolphins, Chargers and Panthers — each could be drafting a quarterback in the first round and there could be some jockeying for the Giants’ pick. Despite Tagovailoa’s recent hip surgery, he is still considered one of the top prospects in the draft.

General manager Dave Gettleman does not have a history of trading down and stood pat with the No. 2 pick in the 2018 draft, even though there were a handful of highly touted quarterbacks at the top of the board.

“People call you and they want the second pick of the draft for a bag of donuts, a hot pretzel and a hot dog,” Gettleman said after noting the team was determined to take Saquon Barkley with that pick.

“Leave me alone. I don’t have time to screw around.”

This year, LSU Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow is expected to be taken by the Bengals with the No. 1 pick in the draft. Oregon’s Justin Herbert, coming off a Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin, and Tagovailoa are the second and third quarterbacks in the draft, depending on which expert you follow.
