Higuain to take Chelsea's cursed No9 shirt as striker trains for first time since signing on loan

The Argentinian ace yesterday sealed a loan switch to Stamford Bridge from Juventus after cutting short his spell at AC Milan.

It had been hoped that the 31-year-old would have been signed in time to face Spurs in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.

But Chelsea failed to register him in time after they missed yesterday's 12pm deadline.

He will now likely make his debut in the FA Cup against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

And Higuain was gearing up for the encounter against the Owls after being put to work in a solo training session earlier today at Cobham.

The World Cup runner-up has been handed the ill-fated No9 jersey at the club, but will look to break free of its curse.

Mateja Kezman, Khalid Boulahrouz, Andriy Shevchenko, Steve Sidwell, Franco Di Santo, Fernando Torres, Radamel Falcao and Alvaro Morata all disappointed when handed the shirt number.

Higuain will be looking to hit the ground running at Chelsea after being reunited with boss Maurizio Sarri, who he thrived under at Napoli.

The former Juventus striker said: "When the opportunity to join Chelsea presented itself I had to take it.

“It’s a team I’ve always liked that has a lot of history, a wonderful stadium and they play in the Premier League, a league I’ve always wanted to play in.

“I now hope I can give back that trust Chelsea have shown me out on the pitch. I can’t wait to start and I hope to adapt as soon as possible.”
