Giants bury Kyle Lauletta after his debut dud

Kyle Lauletta’s NFL debut did not go well last week and as a result, he was hit with a demotion.

The Giants made another change in their quarterback pecking order for Sunday’s game, again making Lauletta inactive and returning Alex Tanney into the backup role behind Eli Manning.

This was the way the Giants operated the first 11 games this season, with the 30-year-old Tanney as the backup and Lauletta not in uniform on game days. Lauletta gained a promotion, coach Pat Shurmur said, after strong showings in practice.

With the Giants last week leading the Redskins 40-10, Shurmur decided to give Manning the entire fourth quarter off and inserted Lauletta, giving the rookie his first NFL action. It was a rough outing. Lauletta did not complete any of his five passes and threw an interception.

Afterward, Shurmur said, “I feel that enough questions regarding Kyle, that those of you that were interested in seeing him, hopefully you got a chance to see what you were looking for.”

Tanney is a journeyman who has exactly one NFL game of experience on his résumé.
