Germany mocked after getting knocked out of World Cup in group stage

Alan Shearer leads merciless mocking of Germany for their World Cup exit with video of him and Gary Lineker laughing…as England fans lap up ‘revenge’ for Lampard’s disallowed goal in 2010

  • Germany kicked out of world cup at group stage for second tournament in a row
  • Social media has been ruthlessly mocking defeat of the four-time champions
  • Alan Shearer led the laughter while England fans likened the Japanese goal that doomed the Germans to Lampard’s disallowed effort in 2010

Germany are out of the world cup. At the group stage. For the second tournament in a row. Cue a ruthless mocking on social media.

Alan Shearer led the onslaught by tweeting a video of himself cracking up alongside Micah Richard and Gary Lineker, and was joined by football fans from around the world enjoying the schadenfreude of the four-time champions crashing out.

England supporters were particularly overjoyed, comparing the Japan goal which doomed the Germans – allowed to stand by a controversial VAR decision – to Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal at the 2010 world cup.

‘Now you know how it feels’ read one tweet. Another mocked-up image showed Lampard in the VAR booth, laughing as he ruled the ball which led to Japan’s goal had not left the pitch.

Alan Shearer led football fans in a ruthless mocking of Germany as the four-time champions crashed out of the world cup at the group stage – again

England supporters were particularly overjoyed, comparing the Japan goal that doomed Germany to the disallowed Frank Lampard effort from 2010

The defeat means Germany have gone out at the group stage two tournaments in a row, a fact that proved just too funny for many

Germany headed into their final group stage match with Costa Rica knowing they not only needed a win but also had to see results elsewhere go their way in order to make to to the round of 16.

When Spain took the lead early against Japan things appeared to be going the way many had predicted, but then the script was torn up.

Japan equalised against Spain and Costa Rica took the lead, meaning that for a brief moment in time both Spain and Germany would have been knocked out.

The Germans battled back, eventually winning their game 4-2 and dooming the Costa Ricans – but an unlikely Japan winner meant their result didn’t matter.

That goal was hugely controversial, coming as it did from a cut-back ball that initially appeared to have gone out of play before being bundled into the back of the net.

But VAR ruled that the ball had not entirely left the field – by the merest of fractions – meaning the goal was allowed to stand.

In the end, it means Japan emerged as unlikely group winners followed by Spain, sending Costa Rica and Germany home.

‘Soooo happy to see Germany knocked out of the world cup,’ wrote one Twitter user after the final result came in.

Another added: ‘Seeing Germany get knocked out at the group stage is so beautiful.’

‘Australia is in the last 16 of a world cup,’ a third person observed, alongside a video of Socceroos players laughing. ‘Italy, Germany, Belgium are not.’

There was plenty of mockery of the German team’s decision to pose with their hands over their faces at the start of the tournament to protest a Fifa decision to ban them from wearing the One Love armband.

‘Don’t leave your flags behind’, wrote one Qatari sports journalist.

‘Should have stuck to football,’ added another.

The vice-president of one of Qatar’s biggest football teams tweeted only: ‘Bye.’

It means that Germany, four-time champions, eight-times finalists, who demolished hosts Brazil 7-1 in a semi-final eight years ago before going on to lift the trophy, have now failed to progress beyond the group in the last two tournaments.

Their exit is just the latest upset in a tournament that has been full of them and came on the same day that Belgium – another favourite and second-ranked in the world – were also sent home after a woeful performance.

The so-called ‘golden generation’ missed a host of chances, with Lakaku missing at least two clear sitters, to draw against Croatia and finish third in their group with Morocco finishing a surprise top.

They are the first African side to top a world cup group since Nigeria in 1998, helped on their way by a shock 2-0 win over the Belgians.

Saudi Arabia’s 2-1 win over Argentina during the opening round of games also defied predictions, and is one of the biggest upsets in tournament history.

Australia progressing from a group that included the likes of France and Denmark also comes as a huge surprise, with Fifa ranking them 38th in world standings.
