Fury vs Wilder II: WBC vote unanimously in favour of rematch between heavyweights

A statement from the organisation read that the council had reached "a unanimous agreement" for Fury vs Wilder part II.

The two warriors fought out a thrilling draw last weekend, with many believing Fury had been cheated out of completing one of the greatest boxing comebacks.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman stated: “The World Boxing Council conducted a vote through the Board of Governors, which resulted in a unanimous agreement to sanction a direct rematch between WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury.

“Wilder and Fury gave boxing one of the best fights in the heavyweight division in a long time, which has created tremendous popular demand for the fans to see a rematch.

“The WBC is happy to confirm that a direct rematch has been approved and will create in a ruling which will also consider the mandatory status of the division.

“I wish to once again congratulate Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury for their great battle inside the ring and for the exemplary sportsmanship after the bout.”

It appears, from the wording of the statement, that the WBC would put aside the mandatory challenge for the belt to allow the rematch to happen.

That would mean that Dominic Breazeale, would be shunted backwards to allow Fury to have another crack at the American.

Both camps have stated their desire to bring the two heavyweight giants back together – now it will be up them to thrash out a deal.

Fury, 30, challenged for the WBC strap in LA last weekend and he outboxed Wilder, 33, for much of the fight.

Despite having to rise from the canvas twice, Fury bemused the champion with a stinging jab and well executed right hand.

As the Brit looked to have ripped the belt away from Wilder, the fight was declared a split decision draw, much to the disapproval of Fury and Warren.

The judges ruled the contest a draw, after harsh scores of 115-111, 112-114 and 113-113.

SunSport reported how Fury's promoter Frank Warren was confident the WBC would agree that a rematch as it is in the best interest.

Talking on the BBC’s Costello and Bunce podcast, Warren said: "The WBC at the moment are putting it before their board of governors, I would assume and I will expect that they will order the rematch.

“Both parties want the fight- we will do what we’ve got to do, everybody wants to see the rematch and I’m sure it will happen, and it happens to everybody’s agenda.

“The thing about it all is that Tyson wants to fight in the UK – he felt cheated out there (in the US) and he was cheated.

“That’s really our agenda at the moment, to try get the fight in the UK. That fight out in the States was the biggest pay-per-view fight I think in the last 15 or 16 years for the heavyweight division.

“It’s a big fight, it’s the biggest fight out there.”
