Fire at Las Vegas motel apartment complex leaves 5 dead, injures 13

Five people were killed and 13 were injured in a fire that broke out early Saturday morning in a three-story motel apartment complex in Las Vegas.

The fire started around 4 a.m. in a first-floor unit of the Alpine Motel Apartments, the Las Vegas fire department said in a Facebook post.

Authorities arriving on the scene saw heavy smoke and several people hanging out of windows. Several jumped and were injured, the department said.

Responders put out the fire within five minutes, and no firefighters were injured.

The fire displaced another 23 people, the department said. Evacuees were gathering at Las Vegas High School.

The incident was under investigation, which is standard procedure in fatal fires, the department said.
