Ex-Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal recovering after fighting off three knife-wielding robbers in attack outside home

FORMER Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal is recovering after fending off knife-wielding robbers outside his home.

Carvalhal had returned to his home in the Portuguese city of Braga from his team Rio Ave’s draw with Maritimo, which saw the club equal their top flight record of 51 points.

But as he arrived home in the early hours Carvalhal was confronted by three masked men who demanded he hand over cash.

Carvalhal, 54, refused and fought back, and was left with cuts and bruises but was otherwise unhurt.

The former Owls chief revealed: “As I was travelling back to my house in Braga from Madeira yesterday, I was attacked by three hooded individuals at around 2.15am.

"My natural instinct was to put up a fight – that was perhaps a risky decision.

“But  with the help of my son, Jose Carlos, we managed to get out of the situation.

“We have a few cuts and bruises but nothing serious.”

Ex-Swans boss Carvalhal, added: "The Braga police were called to the scene immediately and couldn't have done any more to help.

“They dealt with the incident and I hope that they catch those responsible for this attempted robbery.

"I want to thank people for all the shows of friendship and support.

"But I would ask you not to contact me or my family at this time to help us get through this situation as soon as possible.”

The incident left Carvalhal shaken but could not diminish his achievements at Rio Ave, whose previous record haul of 51 points was three seasons ago.

The club, whose Estadio dos Arcos has a capacity of just 12,000, currently stand sixth in the Primeira Liga.

They now have a realistic chance of equalling their best-ever finish of fifth and earning a Europa League spot for next term.
