England vs Iran World Cup starting XI odds: Bookies predict Three Lions team after Nations League debacle | The Sun

But what was already a tough selection process for the Three Lions boss became even tougher after a run of disappointing performances and results.

The 3-3 draw with Germany showed there was at least a little resilience in the side and has taken a small portion of the heat off Southgate.

As the countdown continues to that opening clash with Iran on November 21, Betfair have looked at the players most likely to start that game.

While many positions and players pick themselves, there will be question marks over the entirety of the defence and attacking selections after the recent displays – as well as some iffy Premier League spells too.

But there doesn't seem to be any doubt about the man between the sticks as Jordan Pickford (1/7) looks set to keep his place in goal.

He's ahead of Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale (4/1) and Nick Pope (9/1) who started the draw with Germany.

Then onto a contentious position, with Trent Alexander-Arnold set to MISS OUT on a starting spot for this game, according to Betfair .

The Liverpool star recently became the youngest player in Liverpool's history to reach 50 European appearances but was AXED from the match day squad for the Germany game.

Betfair have Reece James (3/10) and Kyle Walker (8/15) ahead of him for that right-back spot, with TAA odds-against (3/1) to get the call.

Despite a productive season going forward, questions marks over his defensive displays continue to trouble Alexander-Arnold.

There appears no doubt as to who England will play in the heart of defence with John Stones (1/25) and Harry Maguire (4/7) appearing nailed on to start, despite more criticism for the Manchester United captain.

While Luke Shaw is now in pole position to claim the left-back spot (4/9), jumping ahead of Ben Chilwell (5/2) and Kieran Trippier (2/1) who can play there.

Declan Rice (1/25) and Jude Bellingham (1/12) are nailed on for the midfield spots.

Mason Mount definitely remains in the hunt though at 11/10, with Kalvin Phillips (11/4), Jordan Henderson (13/2) and James Ward-Prowse (10/1) amongst those with a lot to prove.

If fit, there's absolutely no doubt that skipper Harry Kane (1/50) will lead the Three Lions' forward line – but who plays alongside him?

Betfair predict Raheem Sterling (8/15) and Phil Foden (4/11) will be the two to occupy the other attacking slots, despite neither offering a whole lot in the latest international break.

Bukayo Saka (6/5) made a huge impact when he came on and almost certainly is pushing for that starting berth.

Jack Grealish (10/3) is the next shortest odds, though a return to form could come at the right time for Manchester United pals Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho (both 25/1) to stake their claim.
