Darwin Nunez next club odds: Man United lead a host of Europe's biggest clubs in race to sign Benfica's newest wonderkid

MANCHESTER UNITED are the firm favourites to land the signing of Darwin Nunez, the young Benfica striker who is in high demand.

Sky Bet have placed the Manchester side as 9/4 favourites, ahead of the likes of Newcastle, PSG and the majority of Europe's top side, who are also rumoured to be interested.

The Uruguayan striker has caught the headlines in just his second season at Benfica, having scored 34 goals in 41 games for the Portuguese side this season.

Six of those goals were scored in big Champions League games, with the Uruguayan bagging twice in a 3-0 win over Barcelona, once at the Allianz Arena, the winner away at Ajax in the last 16, and in both legs of Benfica's quarter-final with Liverpool.

The striker, who will be 23 by the time the new season gets underway, joined Benfica from Almeria in 2020, having scored 16 goals in his first season in European football in Spain's second division as a 20-year-old.

He is currently Benfica's record signing, having cost £22m, beating the previous record of the current Wolves player Raul Jimenez, making him the most expensive signing in Portuguese football history.

A striker is one of Manchester United's main priorities for the transfer window coming up, with Edinson Cavani's contract expiring at the end of June.

Cristiano Ronaldo still has a year left on his current deal, but is 37, and returning loanee Anthony Martial's future at the club seems uncertain, after scoring just once in 12 appearances for Sevilla.

New Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag will be desperate to improve his squad that could only manage a sixth-place finish this season, falling 13 points short of the top four.

Newcastle are another club linked with the Uruguayan striker, with Eddie Howe's side in the hunt for players to help push the Magpies towards the European places next year.

Callum Wilson, Chris Wood and Dwight Gayle are all aged 30 or over, so Howe may be looking for a more youthful forward who can lead the frontline for years to come. Sky Bet price a move to Newcastle at 7/1.

PSG are also rumoured to be monitoring Nunez's situation, though having recently pinned Kylian Mbappe down to a new contract it's unlikely the French giants would be able to offer Nunez regular first team football.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool are also thought to be keeping a close eye on the Uruguayan, especially after scoring two goals against his side in the Champions League this season.

The departure of Divock Origi to AC Milan this summer has opened up a potential slot in the Liverpool attack for Nunez, but it's thought that the strength and depth of the Red's attack at the moment isn't a huge area of concern.
