Darts star shows off beer belly to audience while on stage at tournament

Darts fans got more than they bargained for at the German Grand Prix over the weekend.

The event was won by Luke Humphries, who clinched his maiden European Tour title in Munich. The Englishman thrashed Michael van Gerwen 7-0 in the semi-finals before toppling Martin Lukeman 8-2 in the final.

The success of Lukeman – the world number 74 – was also one of the stories of the tournament. The 37-year-old from Watford, nicknamed ‘Smash’, looked in complete shock following his semi-final victory over 13th seed Damon Heta. It was a career highlight for Lukeman, who only secured his PDC Tour Card last year.

Before the match, however, he looked calmness personified. So calm, in fact, that he lifted his shirt to unveil his sizeable stomach, to the delight of the Munich crowd.

As he collected his runners-up trophy after the final, Lukeman said: “I've got no words, I think the German crowd have adopted me!”

He then took to Twitter after the event, writing: “Congrats @lukeh180! Really proud of what I’ve achieved this weekend. Thanks @OfficialPDC for a great event and to the crowd, who I think have adopted me! Thanks for all the messages, means a lot.”

And while he was defeated in the final, a prediction he made years ago proved to be absolutely spot on regarding victor Humphries. He explained: “I've known Martin for a long time, since before he was on the tour.

"He smashed me in a competition about five or six years ago, and he said to ‘you'll make it big-time, you'll win titles’ and he was right. Little did we know six years later we were going to be in a big PDC final!

"This means the world for me and I'm absolutely over the moon with this win."
