Chelsea legend Zola in hospital with gallstones with no date for work return set

The Italian's absence complicates the situation of Maurizio Sarri, whose job at Stamford Bridge hangs by a thread following recent form slump.

Zola underwent an operation to cure a gallstone problem last week, but he needed to be re-admitted following complications from the surgery.

The Mail report that Chelsea have not set a return date for the 52-year-old Italian and he will miss Thursday's Europa League game against Malmo.

Any potential involvement in preparations for Sunday's Carabo Cup final again Manchester City is also in doubt.

Zola's unavailability could impact the board's stance on Sarri's future, whose job is in danger following the Blues' dreadful form in recent weeks.

Chelsea stars reportedly believe the former Napoli coach will be sacked next week if they are again humiliated by City in the cup final at Wembley.

The Blues suffered their heaviest defeat in 28 years when they travelled to the Etihad earlier in February.

Zola was thought to be one of the candidates to take charge of the club until the end of the season.

Also Zinedine Zidane and Frank Lampard are thought to be in the mix for the post.

Chelsea's top brass held talks over Sarri's future after the Blues crashed out of the FA Cup following a 2-0 loss to Manchester United on Monday.

The under-fire coach has also revealed he has not been in touch with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, nor with senior director Marina Granovskia, following the defeat.
