Broncos castoff is Jets’ first look at replacing Josh McCown

The Jets have begun their search for a new backup quarterback.

With Josh McCown undecided about his future, the Jets are looking for someone else to back up Sam Darnold. Trevor Siemian will visit the Jets on Wednesday, according to a source.

Siemian spent last year as Kirk Cousins’ backup with the Vikings. The 27-year-old spent the first three years of his career with the Broncos, who drafted him in the seventh round in 2015. Siemian started 14 games for the Broncos in 2016 and 10 games in 2017.

Siemian has thrown for 5,686 yards in his career, completing 59.3 percent of his passes. He has 30 career touchdown passes and 24 interceptions.

McCown is a free agent and said last week he is unsure if he wants to keep playing. The only quarterbacks on the Jets roster at the moment are Darnold and Davis Webb.

Jamison Crowder believes he can help out Darnold by being a “friendly target.”

“I think I can be very valuable,” the new Jets wide receiver said. “I’ve had a pretty good start to my career, mainly in the slot being able to find holes in the defense and being a very friendly target for the quarterback. I hope to continue that success with the Jets and being a very valuable target for Sam.”

The Jets signed Crowder to a three-year, $28.5 million contract with $17 million guaranteed last week. They expect him to play slot receiver in coach Adam Gase’s offense and give Darnold a good target.

Crowder is coming off a down year. He battled an ankle injury that forced him to miss seven games for the Redskins. He had 29 catches for 388 yards and two touchdowns. He had 67 and 66 catches in the prior two years.

“It was very frustrating,” Crowder said. “Injuries are part of the game. I’m healthy now. I’m feeling good and better than ever.”

New Jets guard Kelechi Osemele is excited to be part of the Jets and he is really excited to be reunited with C.J. Mosley, his former teammate with the Ravens. Osemele gushed about the linebacker on Tuesday.

“I can’t say enough good things about C.J. He’s just a ballplayer, man,” Osemele said. “Sideline-to-sideline, explosive, he just really puts himself in the best possible position if you watch his film.”

“He has ball skills. He catches the ball like a receiver. He’s just got so much natural instinct on the field. When you think of a football player, I think of C.J. Mosley. He’s just a natural. I’m excited to have him on the team. I know what he’s capable of. He’s extremely productive. He’s extremely consistent. I think that’s probably, in my opinion and I might be slightly biased, but I think that was the best acquisition of the offseason.”

DL Henry Anderson admits he “was a little worried” when he first heard Gregg Williams was the Jets’ new defensive coordinator. There was speculation that Williams would run a 4-3, which might lead the Jets to move on from Anderson.

Instead, they signed him to a three-year, $25 million deal last week to play in Williams’ 3-4 base defense.

“I’m just expecting for him to show a lot of different looks,” Anderson said. “I think he’ll do a good job of tailoring the defense to the personnel that we have. I know he’s got a reputation for putting guys in position to succeed.”

The Jets re-signed TE Eric Tomlinson and OL Brent Qvale, providing depth. They also officially announced the signing of TE Daniel Brown, who should be a special teams contributor. … Free agent OL Stefen Wisniewski visited the Jets on Tuesday, according to a source. Wisniewski has played center and guard.
