Brendan Rodgers leaves Celtic ahead of £6m Leicester switch to replace Puel

The former Liverpool boss is the man Leicester want to take over at the King Power Stadium after they sacked Claude Puel on Sunday.

The Foxes have been locked in talks with Celtic over the past two days after SunSport revealed they were trying to thrash out a deal which would see the 46-year-old return to the Premier League.

It is understood Neil Lennon is now set to be handed the chance to return to Celtic Park as caretaker boss until the end of the season.

A Celtic statement said: "Celtic today confirmed that it has been approached by Leicester City to speak to Brendan Rodgers with regards to their current managerial vacancy.

"Brendan has indicated to the Club that this is an opportunity he wishes to investigate further and therefore, very reluctantly, the Club has granted him permission to speak to Leicester."

Rodgers has been identified as the ideal candidate after his work at Swansea and Liverpool before moving to Scotland.

Foxes chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha took the decision to sack Puel following a run of just one win in nine games.

That included Saturday’s 4-1 thumping at home to Crystal Palace — but Puel’s position has been under review for a while.

It had been thought the Celtic gaffer would see out the season before moving on as he bids to make history.

But after late-night talks, Leicester are confident of getting a deal done – with Rodgers' No2 Chris Davies and Kolo Toure likely to follow him to the King Power.

Should it go through, stunned Celtic chiefs are expected to turn to former boss Lennon, 47, to lead the team to eight in a row.

He won three league titles and two Scottish Cups during his first stint as boss – and remains close to the Hoops board.

That would see an instant return to Easter Road for the ex-Hibs manager in Saturday's Scottish Cup tie.
