Benbatl set to make belated reappearance at Newmarket on Friday in the Joel Stakes

BIG Ben will look to hit the right notes in Friday's Joel Stakes.

Multiple Group 1 winner Benbatl has had his comeback run delayed by soft ground so far this summer.

But conditions are set to fall right for the Newmarket Group 2, which he won by five lengths last season.

Saeed bin Suroor's stable star heads the Joel betting at 3-1 with Coral, and his trainer is hoping he can enhance his impeccable record fresh.

Bin Suroor said: "He's a very solid horse. He has won Group 1's in Germany, Dubai and Australia and he has won big races in England.

"He is going really well, he is happy, healthy and sound. We gave him a break after his winter in Dubai and he is a horse who runs well fresh.

"He'll go for the Joel at Newmarket on Friday, he won it well last year. We've been waiting for a while to run him.

"We wanted to go to Goodwood and then there was a race at Haydock, but the ground was heavy.

"We're looking forward to it and looking to see a good performance from him."

Provided the ground doesn't come up deep on British Champions Day at Ascot next month, that will be his next port of call.

Bin Suroor added: "The timing is also right for Champions Day, but he will only go there if the ground is suitable.

"We took him last year when it was soft and he didn't like it. He's got the option of the QEII and Champion Stakes.

"We'll wait and see, we just need to get him started."
