Arsenal fail in £55m transfer offer for RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano – The Sun

RB LEIPZIG have rebuffed a £55million bid from Arsenal for defender Dayot Upamecano, according to reports.

The Gunners are aware of their need to strengthen the defence having already broken their transfer record on Lille winger Nicolas Pepe.

German publication Bild report on a mega offer for Upamecano, 20, failing on Monday.

With the transfer window shutting on Thursday for English teams, Unai Emery's side are cutting it fine for bringing in a new centre-back.

William Saliba joins Dani Ceballos, Gabriel Martinelli and Pepe in signing this summer but the young Frenchman will spend the season on loan at Saint-Etienne.

Barcelona ace Samuel Umtiti has been subject to rumours regarding a move to North London but is thought to be out of their price range.

UP AND AT THEM

Reports of Arsenal's interest in Upamecano began buzzing around in May.

He played a key role in France's run to the Euro Under-21 Championship semi-finals while being watched by Gunners scouts.

Emery had reportedly earmarked the 20-year-old for a quick swoop after Arsenal's humiliating 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in the Europa League final.

Under contract to 2021, it has been claimed that Upamecano's release clause will drop from £92m to £73m next summer.

And, having made 22 appearances for Leipzig last season, the Bundesliga club are fiercely determined to keep him in Saxony.
