Arsenal and Tottenham set to lock horns to sign Newcastle star Fabian Schar

The Swiss international has impressed this season under Rafa Benitez, alerting the two North London rivals.

According to The Mirror, both clubs "monitored Schar when he was at first club Basel" and they have been impressed with his performances this season.

He has featured 21 times for the Magpies scoring three goals.

The 27-year-old won February's goal of the month award for his piledriver in the 2-0 win against Burnley, but it is his powerful defending that has been most impressive.

Newcastle picked him up for a bargain £3million last summer from Deportivo.

While Newcastle may have to fend off interest in their star defender this summer, they will be desperate to keep one of his team-mates on Tyneside.

Salomon Rondon continues to impress since he joined on loan from West Brom, and the powerful frontman has begged the club to keep him next season.

Newcastle chiefs refused to pay £16.5million to sign Rondon on a permanent basis last summer, largely because of his age.

But the Venezuelan, who turns 30 in September, hopes a deal can be agreed this off-season.

Rondon said: “The club knows what I want and what my family want.

"If there is an opportunity for me to be here, I’ll stay here 100 per cent.

“I play with the No 9 on my back. If I could stay for many years I’d love to.

“If not I will say thank you to everybody and see what happens next.”
