6.30pm Arsenal news LIVE: Hinteregger £22m transfer battle, Wenger rejected by Bayern, Emery blasts Mourinho rumours – The Sun

ARSENAL have acted decisively to strip Granit Xhaka of the club captaincy following his outburst at the fans during the Gunners' 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.

But that didn't stop the North Londoners throwing away another lead as Vitoria equalised for a point in the Europa League – amid continued speculation over Unai Emery's position at the club.

  • BAYERN MUNICH have turned down the opportunity to appoint Arsene Wenger as their new manager.

The German champions held talks with the former Arsenal boss following the sacking of Niko Kovac earlier this week.

Wenger, 70, was believed to be the front-runner and called club president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge to express his desire to take over at the Allianz.

But it appears Bayern have rejected his advances and opportunity to step back into work because they could not agree on a length of contract.

Wenger wanted a long-term deal but Bayern were keen on offering him a contract until the end of the season before assessing whether to appoint a more youthful boss.

It was believed he called Rummenigge on Wednesday afternoon to signal his interest in coaching Bayern.

  • JAMES RODRIGUEZ is set to depart Real Madrid in January, with a host of Premier League clubs interested in the midfielder, Spanish reports claim.

The Colombian finished his two season loan with Bayern Munich this summer and the German champions opted against signing him permanently.

As a result Real chiefs looked to offload the South American with Serie A giants Napoli just failing in a bid to sign the 28-year-old.

And despite making nine appearances this term, scoring once, El Desmarque report club president Florentino Perez has told Rodriguez’s agent Jorge Mendes the player can leave.

Manchester United, who failed to bring in a midfielder this summer after targeting Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen, are named as the most likely destination for the unwanted Real star.

But Arsenal and Chelsea are also said to be monitoring the 2016 World Cup Golden Boot winner’s situation in the Spanish capital.

  • CHARLIE NICHOLAS does not fancy Arsenal's chances against Leicester on Sunday.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Gunners forward said: “It's seriously worrying.

“They've got Leicester on Saturday evening and at the moment it looks like they could blow them away.”

  • ARSENAL are reportedly set to battle West Ham for £22million-rated Frankfurt defender Martin Hinteregger in desperate bid to stop shipping goals.

The Gunners are desperate to shore up their defensive ranks in January and Football Insider claim they are looking to the Austrian international.

Hinteregger, 27, checks all the boxes for Arsenal with his ability in defence, to score goals at the other end and play on the left-side of the centre of defence.

The 44-cap Austria star has played in all 12 of Frankfurt's games this season – including their 3-0 Europa League defeat against Arsenal.

  • ARSENE WENGER shouldn't be named the new manager of Bayern Munich because he’s TOO OLD, according to Chelsea legend Marcel Desailly.

The former Arsenal boss, 70, has been out of work since leaving the Emirates in the summer of 2018.

Speaking on beIN Sports, Desailly said: “No, he should not be in the dugout. It's not for him any more.

“He has great possibilities to restructure, to build up the philosophy of the club, towards the first team and the academy.

“But as a frontline [manager], we don't see him anymore. He's 70 years old.”
