STEPHAN LICHTSTEINER confirmed he will leave Arsenal this summer by posting a heartfelt message to his fans.
The defender has failed to make his mark at the Emirates since he joined on a free transfer from Juventus in June 2018.
The Swiss star wrote on Instagram: “Dear Gunners, we were close to adding an important chapter to this amazing club's history.
“But to be close… is unfortunately not good enough. This is hard to accept. I'm very disappointed.
“It was our objective to bring Arsenal back on the highest international level and to win trophies. Both belong to this great club.
“I wish my team-mates, my coach and his staff, all hard working employees and all Gunner fans simply the best!
“I'm confident our team can compete our mission next season! I loved to be a part of the club”
“It was a great challenge and experience without a happy end, unfortunately.
“Thank you very much for your overwhelming support! It was much appreciated!
“See you. Stephan.”

ARSENAL boss Unai Emery's transfer plans could go up in smoke as summer target Thomas Meunier is desperate to seal a move to Old Trafford, as he is a huge Manchester United fan.
The Paris Saint-Germain right-back, 27, has made the pilgrimage to Old Trafford a few times in the past campaign to support his beloved side, according to respected journalist Kristof Terreur.
One fan joked that he felt sorry for Meunier having to watch Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side this season given the quality of their football.
But the good news is that doing so has apparently only confirmed his desire to sign for them and not rivals Arsenal.
The two Premier League big boys lead the chase for the £25million-rated Belgium star – who was also reportedly offered a contract by Everton.
Meunier, 27, is a childhood United fan and Solskjaer is said to be impressed by his versatility and attacking potential.
Terreur tweeted: “Belgian wing back Thomas Meunier is a wanted man. Unai Emery is pushing to get him to Arsenal. Man United have him on their list too.
“PSG are keen on selling him for the right fee.
“Meunier is a childhood United fan and even attended some games this season.”

ARSENAL fans have begged the club not to sign Jerome Boateng – even though he would replace struggling Shkodran Mustafi in the first team.
The 30-year-old looks set to leave Bayern Munich this summer after failing to impress under the management of Niko Kovac.
Boateng has attracted interest from a number of Europe's biggest clubs including Arsenal, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.
And he could be available for just £20m after Bayern president Uli Hoeness advised him to leave.
Unai Emery is desperate to bring in defensive reinforcements, but fans are not convinced the German is the answer to their problems.
Arsenal fans want to replace Mustafi following his disastrous spell in North London since he joined from Valencia in 2016.
Speaking on Twitter, one said: “I really hope we don't buy Jerome Boateng. Buying these finished players is not the right direction for the club. I don't think it's gonna happen.”
Another said: “Boateng lol. Listen Arsenal need to fix up and sign far far more cleverly. Go for that young CB from Leipzig. Boateng is finished. He's worse than Mustafi.”
While one claimed: “Arsenal fans want him? Boateng is 30 and will demand big wages. Great career but he's been struggling with injuries last few and I believe he is past his best.”
“Why invest our limited budget in someone that has no resell value too?”
Stuttgart teenage sensation Ozan Bakan has emerged as another option alongside Espanyol defender Mario Hermoso who could cost just £18m.

ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN has said beating Tottenham in the Champions League final was personal to him because of his Arsenal past.
The midfielder spent six years at the Emirates before signing for the Reds in 2017.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, 25, was an unused sub in Saturday's win over Spurs in Madrid.
He only returned to the Liverpool squad in April following a year-long spell on the sidelines due to a cruciate ligament rupture.
But the Ox was all smiles while celebrating with his team-mates on the pitch after Liverpool beat Spurs 2-0 at Wanda Metropolitano.
And in a classy interview with former fellow Gooner Per Mertesacker, he paid tribute to his old pals in London.
He said: “As former Gooners, we know what that meant to all Arsenal fans out there.
“It was massive for us at Liverpool, but 'once a Gooner, always a Gooner', that's what they're saying.
“I had a personal, sort of feeling in that game that we needed to get that done for the people I left at Arsenal.
“I know they were all willing us on to win that one. I'm happy that we could do it.”
