  • IT may have been a week off from playing football for Manchester United, but clearly the transfer rumour mill did not get the memo.

The big transfer story – if not the biggest ever – was Lionel Messi being linked with a shock move to Old Trafford, which would put an end to his glittering career at Barcelona.

The Argentine has had a war of words with the club’s sporting director Eric Abidal in recent weeks, with hints he could finally leave Camp Nou.

Should this remarkable deal occur, it would be on a free transfer, with reports Messi has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave for nothing at the end of every season.

But on the way out of Man Utd looks increasingly likely to be Paul Pogba, who hopes to return to Juventus – the club he joined and left in between his two spells at the Red Devils.

Reports suggest talks between the Italian giants and the Frenchman’s agent Mino Raiola have begun.

And despite links to Real Madrid, Tuttosport insist Pogba is choosing Juve as he wishes to be reunited with Paulo Dybala.

Yet, there is also bad news for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with Mauricio Pochettino waiting in the wings to take over at Old Trafford.

The Argentine was unceremoniously sacked by Tottenham earlier in the season, leaving a number of interested parties ready to fight for his signature.

Solskjaer reportedly must ensure United finish in the top six to keep hold of his job as the underfire Norwegian continues to battle to save his beloved club.

But, claims suggest Poch has told his friends that he is eager to resume his career in the summer and is excited by the prospect of the Man Utd job becoming available.

Finally, Odion Ighalo could be edging closer to making his debut – and it could come in the Europa League.

It has been confirmed that the former Watford striker, who joined on loan from Shanghai Greenland Shenhua until the end of the season, has been named in the squad for the European competition.

And he could face Club Brugge in the Last 32 first leg on February 20.

Ighalo has been undergoing a personalised training programme to get himself fit and firing for the Red Devils.
