‘Wonder Woman 1984’ to premiere on HBO Max and in theaters next month

No need to wonder about Wonder Woman any longer.

Warner Bros. confirmed Thursday that “Wonder Woman 1984” will premiere in theaters on Dec. 16 and will also stream on HBO Max starting on Christmas Day.

The announcement comes after months of uncertainty about the future of the superhero film — which stars Gal Gadot — in the wake of coronavirus-fueled film delays and theater closings. The movie had been slated to open June 5, but was subsequently shifted to Aug. 14, and then Oct. 2 before settling on Dec. 25; Warner Bros. also had floated the idea of moving the flick to 2021.

“As we navigate these unprecedented times, we’ve had to be innovative in keeping our businesses moving forward while continuing to super-serve our fans,” said Ann Sarnoff, chair and CEO of WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Group, in a statement. “This is an amazing film that really comes to life on the big screen and, working with our partners in the exhibition community, we will provide that option to consumers in the U.S. where theaters are open. We realize that a lot of consumers can’t go back to the movies due to the pandemic, so we also want to give them the option to see WONDER WOMAN 1984 via our HBO Max platform.”

Showcasing the film simultaneously on HBO Max and in moviehouses gained favor from theaters this month as a way to bolster streamer subscriptions while hosting a new release in cinemas at the same time.

The PG-13 potential blockbuster is directed by Patty Jenkins and also stars Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Robin Wright as Antiope and Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta. It features two new foes for Wonder Woman to battle: Kristen Wiig as The Cheetah and Pedro Pascal as Max Lord.

“Wonder Woman 1984” is a follow-up to the first franchise installment in 2017, which grossed $822 million worldwide.
