Woman buys husband DNA test for birthday – but the result ‘poisons’ her marriage

When you've been with someone for a very long time, you might think you know absolutely all there is to know about them.

But one woman was extremely unsettled to discover she and her husband shared a secret that neither one of them had a single clue about.

The disturbing fact only came to light after she purchased Ancestry DNA tests for them to celebrate her partner's birthday.

The unnamed woman revealed all in an emotional letter which was shared on Slate.com's Dear Prudence podcast.

Podcast host Daniel Mallory Ortberg read the letter aloud and then discussed with guest Connor Goldmith, a literary agent.

The letter explained that the woman and her husband had grown up in a small town together and now had a two-year-old son.

It went on to say that she bought the tests as a gift, but when the results came back, she wished she'd never came up with the idea.

"The results came back saying we are actually first cousins on the paternal side," confessed the woman. "This news unsettles me and has left my husband's world in tatters."

While the woman was obviously upset by the revelation that her husband is her cousin, she was also worried about the fact that this news meant a member of her family had been unfaithful in their marriage.

She continued: "His parents have been married for 30 years and my husband has always held his mother close to sainthood.

"He will not talk about this to me, we are sleeping in separate rooms and it is starting to affect our son.

"This secret is poisoning my marriage and I am terrified it will blow up the rest of our family.

"My-father-in-law likes to rhapsodise how he married the first girl he ever kissed, this is going to kill him."

She adds that she feels unable to confide in her mother or sisters and that she's doesn't know what to do as she was meant to visit them this summer.

The podcast hosts are initially pretty chilled with their reaction to the whole thing, revealing they know people who have found themselves in a similar situation.

They add that maybe the couple should try going to therapy and that hopefully this tale will put one listener off buying a DNA test in the future, as it never ends well.
