Why the Queen isn’t celebrating her 67th year on the throne

February 6, 2019 is a special day for our country.

This is because the date marks the 67th year that our monarch, Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne.

However for the Queen herself, February 6 is actually a day of sadness and not a great cause for celebration.

This is due to the fact that the anniversary falls on the very same day that her father, King George VI, passed away aged 56, following a battle with lung cancer.

King George VI died in his sleep in 1952 during a stay at Sandringham in Norfolk.

The Queen, honours the day of his death, also known as Accension Day, by staying at the Sandringham Estate and reflecting on the events privately.

She has been at Sandringham since the beginning of the Christmas period, but is due to return to London in the coming days.

Despite the day being incredibly heartbreaking for the Queen, others still choose to celebrate, with soldiers from the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery performing a royal salute of 41 shots in London’s Green Park today.

A 62-gun salute was also put on by the Honourable Artillery Company at the Tower of London.

Elizabeth was just 25-years-old when her father died.

The princess was in Kenya, undertaking a long tour of the Commonwealth, when her husband, Prince Philip broke the news of his passing and informed her that she was now Queen of England.

At the time, Winston Churchill was Prime Minister and Harry S. Truman was President over in the United States.

The Queen became the longest-serving monarch in British history back in 2015, when she beat the reign of her great-great grandmother Queen Victoria.

Victoria was on the throne for 63 years, seven months and two days from June 20, 1837 to January 2, 1901.
