When will child benefit be paid in December 2018?

Here’s what you need to know to help you financially navigate the next two bank holidays.

When will child benefit be paid in December 2018?

HMRC has handily published a list of key diary dates over the festive season to help mums and dads keep on top of their finances.

Child benefit is usually paid early if it’s due on a bank holiday.

If you usually receive payments on the following dates, here's a guide to know when your money will actually arrive:

  • Payments due on December 25 will arrive a day early on December 24 2018
  • Payments due on January 1 2019 will be paid on December 31 2018

If your payment is late, HMRC advises people to check the payment date on their award notice.

All queries should first be directed to your bank before you call the Tax Credit Helpline on 0345 300 3900.

Who can claim child benefit and much can I get?

You can claim child benefit if you’re responsible for one or more children under 16 (or under 20 if they stay in approved education or training).

You get £20.70 a week for your eldest or only child, and then £13.70 a week per child for any additional children.

You may have to pay a tax charge if you (or your partner’s individual income is over £50,000.

This is known as the ‘High Income Child Benefit Charge’.
