The Prince and Princess of Wales released a Christmas portrait with their three children over the weekend – but it has been hit with criticism from around the globe.

In the photo released on X, formerly Twitter, Prince William and Kate, both 41, are pictured smiling alongside their sons Prince George, 10, Prince Louis, five, and Princess Charlotte, eight, who is seated in a chair at the front of the group.

Photographed by Josh Shinner, each member of the Wales family is donning a white shirt, adding to the striking monochrome aesthetic.

However, fans flocked to the social media platform to criticise the image, claiming it was ‘gloomy’, ‘lacked festive cheer’, and looked as though it had been taken at a shopping mall.

The black and white photo showcases dark fabric drapes covering both the background and floor, giving the impression that the set-up could be a photography studio in a shopping centre.

Several unimpressed fans attempted photoshopping Christmas trees into the background to create a more festive atmosphere. Meanwhile, others expressed their disappointment.

One user commented: ‘The lack of festive cheer makes that look gloom and dull’.

While another added: ‘Looks like an awkward family photo’.

‘In no way is this a Christmas picture,’ wrote a third.

A fourth penned: ‘Adams family’.

Further confusion was caused by the lack of shoelaces on the children’s trainers, while a number of people observed what seemed to be an extra leg next to Prince Louis.

It comes after social media users noticed a Photoshop fail, in which Prince Louis seems to be missing the middle finger on his left hand.

The error seemingly went unnoticed by the Wales family because it was released to the masses via their official X, formerly called Twitter, account over the weekend.

Likewise, the thousands of royal fans that praised the intimate family portrait have also failed to acknowledge the mistake.

However, eagle-eyed spectators have taken to X, formerly called Twitter, after noticing the error. One questioned: ‘What happened to Louis’ middle finger?’

A second added: ‘Forget about the missing shoelaces, I’m more worried about Louis’ missing finger.’

A third wrote: ‘Louis is missing a finger; this has got to be the worst Photoshopped pic ever.’

Another said: ‘Louis is missing a finger and Charlotte’s left hand seems too long.’

A fifth added: ‘While it’s a nice family photo, as soon as I looked at it, I noticed Louis hand. He’s missing a finger. That got me looking closer. His right leg looks swollen. Where’s William’s thigh? Where’s Kate’s other foot?’

The photograph was one of several taken of the King and Queen in full royal regalia on the day of the coronation (pictured: another of the series of pictures)

The King and Queen’s Christmas card is an altogether more formal affair, showing Charles and Camilla inside Buckingham Palace shortly after the coronation in May

Taken by Josh Shinner, the image shows the three men and boys dressed in matching plain shirts – George opting for a Ralph Lauren Polo number – and dark trousers, while Kate and Charlotte have swapped the trousers for denim jeans.

The King and Queen, meanwhile, have opted for a Coronation photograph taken at Buckingham Palace to grace their festive card, which will be sent to friends, family and colleagues.

The formal image, showing Charles and Camilla in the palace throne room following the ceremony in May, was taken by photographer Hugo Burnand, who captured the couple standing side by side.

Charles wears the Imperial State Crown, while Camilla wears Queen Mary’s Crown; the King is also pictured wearing a coronation tunic and the robe of estate.

Made of purple silk velvet embroidered in gold, the robe was worn by King George VI in 1937.

The Queen is wearing her robe of estate made by Ede and Ravenscroft and designed and hand embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework. She also wears her coronation dress designed by Bruce Oldfield.

It is the couple’s second Christmas card since Charles became King last year, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8 2022.

The first card of his reign featured an image of the King and Queen at the Braemar Games in Scotland on September 3, five days before his mother’s death, when he was still the Prince of Wales.
