Voice of the Mirror: Care for our carers

We must no longer allow our uncaring Government to abandon the nation’s carers when as many as eight million of us are looking after someone else.

We salute the unselfish heroes helping their frail, disabled and vulnerable relatives. Without them, people would suffer grievously and both the NHS and social services would collapse under the financial and physical burden.

It’s time for ministers to stop hiding behind Brexit and produce a comprehensive plan for social care – including support for carers paid a paltry £65 a week, if they get anything at all.

A report from think tank Demos values the public contribution of carers at £139billion, far higher than the £125billion NHS budget.

We are one of the world’s largest economies but the reliance our country places on carers is enormous. The Daily Mirror’s Fair Care for All campaign is a fight for fairness and decency.

It’s time to take care of our nation’s carers.

Go ape over oil

Burning orangutans alive, or shooting these great apes dead, is an obscene price to pay for the food and goods we buy.

Our harrowing report highlighting the slaughter taking place in the rainforests of Malaysia in order to increase palm oil production must be a wake-up call.

The oil is found in everything from pizza and biscuits to soaps and detergents, so consumers have the spending power to save orangutans.

We can all do our bit by checking ingredients and demanding better labelling. And we can buy either palm oil-free products, or those with oil from certified sustainable sources.

Together, we can save the orangutans.

Say again, BBC
