A food blogger has revealed how to make watermelon tuna in five simple steps by marinading the fruit in soy sauce and sesame oil over night.

Eva Friedl from Salzburg, Austria, who goes by vegaliciouslyeva, has built up a social media following of more than 74,000 after sharing delicious plant-based recipes.

Eva told he followers that it doesn’t taste like watermelon after the recipe is finished and that it was so convincing that her boyfriend couldn’t guess what she’d used to replicate the popular fish dish.

To cook, Eva marinated the watermelon in dark soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, with black and white sesame seeds and grated ginger.

She left it to soak overnight served it with fresh cucumbers, pickled ginger, spring onions topped with sriracha mayonnaise for an added kick.

1. Cut the watermelon slices into sushi sized rectangles. ⠀

2. For the marinade mix together toasted sesame seed oil, soy sauce and grated ginger.⠀

2. Marinate the watermelon pieces for about 4 hours. You can also let it marinate overnight but then I would add a little bit of water so it doesn’t get too salty.⠀

3. Once marinated cook in a pot with the lid closed for about 10-15 minutes depending on the size. The pieces should all be very soft. ⠀

4. Drain (you can use the marinade for an asian salad dressing) and turn in some sesame seeds on four sides. ⠀

5. Serve with some cucumber slices, sriracha mayo and spring onions.⠀

Optional ingredients you can add to the marinade include; seaweed for an even fishier result and a dash of liquid smoke, ‘for a slightly smokey flavour.’

First, Eva cut around 300g of watermelon (without the peel) into ‘sushi-sized rectangles,’ that resemble the size normally seen with sashimi.

Then she set aside to create the marinade.

She mixed together 60ml of soy sauce with one tablespoon of toasted sesame oil, ¼ teaspoon of grated ginger with the seaweed and liquid smoke.

Placing the watermelon chunks in the marinade and setting them aside to soak, she later recommended leaving it for at least four hours.

She explaind: ‘You can also let it marinate overnight but then I would add a little bit of water so it doesn’t get too salty.’

Once her watermelon chunks were sufficiently marinated, she tumbled them into a pot (along with the marinade) and turned up the heat.

Eva recommends leaving the chunks ‘in a pot with the lid closed for about 10-15 minutes depending on the size or until they are very soft.

Once she finished cooking the watermelon, she covered each side of the watermelon rectangles with regular and black sesame seeds to add a little flavour and crunch.

Her final step was serving with fresh cucumber, pickled ginger and some mayonnaise and sriracha mixed together.

Eva later posted a different recipe using the same method on her instagram and talking about the watermelon sashimi she said, ‘I am totally in love with the watermelon tuna and how many recipes you can use it as a delicious homemade fish replacement.’
