The best Christmas markets in London
Christmas is just around the corner, so it’s time to start planning festive activities for the coming weeks.
And considering there were various restrictions last year, most people will want to make up for lost time and go all out in 2021.
The capital is the place to be for Christmassy activities, boasting everything from winter pop-ups to festive events – and, of course, let’s not forget about its incredible selection of Christmas markets.
We’ve rounded up some of our favourites to pitch up at.
The best Christmas markets in London:
Southbank Centre winter market
Stroll along the Thames under the sparkling Christmas lights at this festive market – which features everything from incredible street food to arty stocking fillers.
Feast on traditional market grub, such as cheese toasties, fondue, bratwurst and mince pies – as well as winter warmers like hot toddies and mulled wine.
Not to mention the traditional Alpine-style chalets help to enhance that festive feeling.
Jimmy’s pop-up snow globes are also back on Southbank for this year, serving French-style dishes – just be sure to book in advance.
Open now until December 24
Christmas at Borough Market
Borough Market is a popular spot in the capital all year round, but from December 1 things will get a little more festive as the site gears up for the big day.
Guests will be able to enjoy tunes from Christmas choirs and buskers as well as all kinds of seasonal goodies from the market’s independent traders – including yule logs, puddings, turkeys, sprouts, cheese and wine.
Then from December 7-9, Borough Market’s Festive Kitchen will take place – a three-day free pop-up, with guest chefs sharing tips and tastings to inspire your Christmas feasting.
And on December 15, an Evening of Cheese will return for another year – with tips on how to create a show-stopping Christmas cheeseboard from the market’s expert cheesemongers.
Open November 22 – January 9
Greenwich late Christmas markets
A lantern parade and the Greenwich Christmas lights will kick off the festivities in the area from 4pm on November 17.
In terms of what to expect, the market’s website states: ‘Children from five local schools, led by jazz band, will parade their handmade colourful lanterns through the ORNC grounds, round Cutty Sark Gardens and into the Market for the big Christmas Countdown and Lights On.’
Then throughout December, Greenwich’s buzzy indoor market will be opening late, selling arts and crafts-focused gifts including handmade jewellery, eco-friendly homewares and accessories – as well as street food and mulled wine.
From November 17
Covent Garden Christmas Village
Back for another year, Covent Garden will be reopening its traditional Christmas market on the Piazza.
Inside guests will find a food market, with goodies from the likes of Pelaton Pizza, Son Of A Sailor, Big Wheen BBQ, United Fried Chicken and The Churros Shop, as well as beverages from a mulled shack serving (you guessed it) mulled wine, mulled cider, mulled rosé and the ultimate boozy hot chocolate.
Elsewhere visitors will find a Christmas tree forest, a winter archway and Santa’s sleigh – perfect for photo opportunities.
There will also be daily live performances from the Covent Garden Christmas Choir – made up of rising stars from London’s West End.
Open now until January 3
Selfridges Christmas Market on the Mews
Selfridges Christmas Market on the Mews is back for a second year – with everything from sustainably-grown Christmas trees and street food to an impressive helter skelter.
This year it will take up the whole of Edwards Mews, located next to the London store on Oxford Street.
The team at Streat Feast have things covered in the food department with burgers and chips by The Tramshed Project, hot dogs from Popdogs, doughnuts by Treats Club and cookies and hot chocolate by Chin Chin – plus plenty more.
Florists will also be on hand to help you design your very own wreath and there will be lots of indulgent treats to buy from the Selfridges Selection range, such as panettone, traditional mince pies, stollen and even bottled mulled wine.
Open now until December 23
The Christmas Fair in Leicester Square
The heart of London’s tourist district comes even more alive during the festive season and its Christmas market promises seasonal treats, incredible food and delicious drinks.
What’s more, there will also be bunch of performances curated by the Underbelly team (who put on the shows at the Southbank pop-up every summer).
On selected days, Olivier Award-winning variety show La Clique will be performing, as well as actors from Austentatious: An Improvised Jane Austen Novel.
From November 17
